Our friends at Afghan American Church are hosting a school backpack drive to bless the local Afghan community. This is an amazing opportunity to get involved in local missions as an individual, small group, and congregation! We are aiming to collect the completed backpacks at LGCC by Thursday, July 31st.
Recommendations for small groups:
- Figure out how many backpacks your group wants to put together.
- Cost: assume $10-$15 to fill a single backpack, plus $5 to $15 per backpack, for a total cost of $15 to $30 per backpack.
- Make a Target/Walmart trip to get all necessary supplies.
- Suggest gathering your group to pack bags, and pray over / write notes for the kids receiving them!
- Bring backpacks to LGCC by Thursday, July 31.

Backpack Preparation Day – Friday, August 1 from 10am-4pm
Join volunteers at Centerville Presbyterian Church (4360 Central Ave, Fremont, CA 94536) to prepare 300 secondary backpacks (from donated funds!) and add brochures and spiritual material into the backpacks donated from other churches/individuals. Back to School Events – Saturday, August 2 & Sunday, August 3
Volunteers needed to help with distributing the backpacks to our local Afghan community. In Fremont, we’ll also have some games/activities for the kids, as well as a used book table. We could use at least 30 volunteers in Fremont and at least 10 volunteers for each of the park events in Concord, Hayward, and San Leandro. This is a great opportunity for middle school and high school students to earn community service credit before school even starts!
